Wordy story of how I got to where I am
I am a pretty open book if you’re looking to read! From my experience, tattoo artists are a different breed of artist. No two share the same history, education, or journey. And this is reflected in the massive amount of diversity in tattooing styles and the cultures surrounding them. I think that’s where my vocation for tattooing first sprouted.
I was raised very conservatively on a horse farm in Morrow, Ohio with little access to the world outside of my back yard and the church. I didn’t have many friends and I spent the majority of my time quietly to myself, often drawing and making crafts. This was a constant in a childhood that did not have many constants. I moved to England when I was 8 and was quickly exposed to a world of new cultures. While over there, my parents took my two siblings and me traveling across Europe to see many historic landmarks, churches/cathedrals/castles, and art museums. I was in awe. However, before we were there for two years, we had to return to the states, where my father ended up passing due to melanoma. From then on, I had a rocky adolescence, flipping back and forth between private school, public school, boarding school, before I was adopted into a new family. During this tumultuous time, art remained my constant and a much needed outlet. I discovered the world of tattoos through the internet in high school and was immediately captivated. Although my new family was supportive, they warned me of the potential dangers (in their eyes) if I were to pursue such a career. So I decided to get out of Ohio to study Marine Biology at the College of Charleston in South Carolina. It didn’t take me very long to accept that, although I do love biology, it wasn’t the field for me. I studied Studio Art with a minor in biology with no clear path. I started working the front desk at a tattoo shop while in college to make a little extra money, get tattooed, and be around other artists outside of academia. After a year of working the front desk, I accepted the position of manager of that tattoo shop. And one year later, I graduated college and finally gave into the calling to learn how to tattoo and I started my first apprenticeship. Although I didn’t learn how to tattoo there, I learned a lot by managing a street shop and helping open a new location.
To pursue to goal of learning how to tattoo, I started my second apprenticeship at Main Line in Chattanooga, TN while still living in SC. I commuted once a month to learn as much as I could in a studio setting, while working in a restaurant. I moved to Tennessee and officially started tattooing October 2019. I cherish my time spent with the folks at Main Line. I learned so much and grew as an artist and tattooer, but my next chapter was calling me in Buffalo, NY.
For my first year in Buffalo, I worked at Sink or Swim in Niagara Falls. I am very grateful for my time there, but logistically it wasn’t a perfect fit. I joined Josh Avery and Joel Mentor at Stay Weird in Kenmore in April of 2023 and am beyond happy working there. We are all passionate about tattooing- both the rich history and the act of creating tattoos. The studio is a cozy little space packed with amazing art and good times. Stop by and say hi! We will likely be listening to Return of the Mack and cracking silly dad jokes!
